Development, construction and operation under one responsibility

Bright & Green does not hand a storage system over to a third-party operator. Those who secure the land and negotiate the grid connection subsequently run the plant as well.

Stand-alone storage

What a storage system on the grid does

A stand-alone battery storage system is connected directly to a substation or to the grid connection of an industrial site. Its revenues derive from three applications that complement each other.

  • Grid services

    Balancing power stabilises the grid within seconds. A storage system prequalified for that service is remunerated by the transmission system operator.

  • Arbitrage

    The storage system charges during low-price hours and discharges during high-price hours. Dispatch follows the quotations on the day-ahead and intraday markets.

  • Peak load for industry

    At the grid connection of an industrial site, the storage system caps load peaks and thereby reduces grid fees. The plant stands on the company premises and is operated by Bright & Green.

What a storage system at the data centre does

A data centre requires power in a quantity and steadiness that a grid connection alone does not assure. A battery storage system on site fulfils four functions at once.

  • Peak load

    The storage system covers load peaks that would otherwise overload the grid connection or increase grid fees.

  • Grid services

    When the data centre is not running at full load, the storage system provides flexibility to the grid and generates additional revenue.

  • Bridging

    In the event of a fault, the storage system bridges the gap until the emergency power supply takes over or grid supply is restored.

  • Connection optimisation

    With a storage system, a lower connection capacity is sufficient, which makes sites viable that would otherwise be ruled out.

How we work

From the site to commissioning

Six steps, all of them the responsibility of Bright & Green. The grid connection comes first, because without a connection agreement even the most suitable land cannot be built on.

  1. Site and grid connection

    Securing land near a substation, applying for the grid connection and obtaining the connection agreement from the grid operator.

  2. Sizing

    Deriving power, capacity and cycle life from the use cases the storage system will later serve.

  3. Permits and safety

    Building application, fire-protection and safety concept, and coordination with the municipality and the fire brigade.

  4. Procurement and construction

    Battery systems, inverters and transformers from the technology partners, installation by Bright & Green.

  5. Commissioning

    Functional testing, prequalification for grid services, grid energisation.

  6. Operation and market access

    Dispatch on market signals, continuous monitoring, maintenance and market access for the whole service life.

Operation

What keeps a storage system safe and profitable for years

The way a battery storage system is operated determines its safety and its profitability. Four tasks govern that across the whole service life.

  • Fire protection and safety concept

    Distances, extinguishing concept, climate control and battery management are planned together rather than added afterwards.

  • Dispatch on market signals

    The plant charges and discharges according to the configured use cases and the prices on the power markets.

  • Monitoring

    Cell condition, temperatures and availability are monitored continuously. Deviations trigger maintenance before they reduce revenue.

  • Market access

    Bright & Green is responsible for the connection to the balancing and intraday markets. The storage system serves several revenue streams at once.
